"Influenza viruses and influenza vaccines - what do we know and where do we go from here."

Anotácia prednášky:

Every year there are 3-5 millions of severe influenza virus cases worldwide, leading to 250,000 to 500,000 deaths according to WHO. Several types of influenza vaccines are available. However, while under the ideal conditions their efficacy reaches up to 75%, under the “normal” conditions, depending on the population and the particular strain, their effectiveness varies between 10 – 60%. Therefore, the new strategies emerged to elicit broad immune responses and to decrease the ability of viruses to create the escape mutants. As a consequence, we might need to redefine the correlates of protection classically used for the evaluation of vaccines.
