SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The principal challenge of the project supports our effort to afforce applied interactions among 3 primary issues: -conservation of 2 endangered traditional horse breeds bred as gene reserves: Norik of Muran and Furioso (genetic biodiversity conservation), -traditional country sustainable use and -hippotherapy that utilizes equine movement in a therapeutic way (motivation, activisation and education of people with physical handicap, social disability or other specific needs). This interaction will undisputedly emphasize the essential relationship between biodiversity and human society, that has been developing for centuries as a reflexion of natural, cultural and historical identity. In Slovakia, the Norik of Muran breed, for instance, is considered as one of the national treasures of biodiversity that significantly contributes to traditional countryside and national biodiversity conservation. The Comenius University Research Station, situated in the National Nature Reserve Šúr (SW Slovakia), that has been protected as unique remnants of tall-stem swamp alder forests with peat bog meadows since 1952 offers an interesting challenge for isolated conservation of biodiversity. For many decades the station has been involved in a wide variety of species conservation projects and its rare forest as well as open ecosystem areas have been managed rather traditionally supporting sustainable use and development.
