Course Module Information
ENL2104: Mobility, Migration and the Environment
Semester 1 | Credits: 5
This module explores migration and mobility as multispecies, material and ecological processes, moving beyond exclusively human-centred narratives. Drawing on environmental humanities, ecology, cultural studies and creative practice, students investigate how the movements of people, animals, plants, and materials shape ecosystems, cultures and imaginaries in times of climate change. Delivered as a blended module across ENLIGHT partner universities, the course combines online lectures and seminars with one in-person, practice-based week in Bratislava. During the intensive week, students work collaboratively across disciplines through creative workshops, field-based activities and Art/Science methodologies in partnership with environmental scientists, artists and cultural practitioners. The module foregrounds creative practice as a mode of inquiry, encouraging students to engage critically and imaginatively with themes such as climate-induced migration, colonial and extractive displacement, multispecies storytelling, and material mobilities (e.g. plastics, seeds, water, soil). Learning culminates in the production of a creative-critical portfolio accompanied by a reflective commentary.
(Language of instruction: English)
