LABORATORY OF MYCOBACTERIAL BIOCHEMISTRY

The etiological agent of tuberculosis – Mycobacterium tuberculosis, causes the disease, which threatened the mankind for thousands of years and is still a major reason of death due to the infectious agent worldwide. The top priority within the mycobacterial research is the development of new and more efficient drugs against tuberculosis. However, these efforts are hampered by lack of information in many aspects of the biology of M. tuberculosis. The main goal of our research is identification of the genes involved in the cell envelope biogenesis and their functional characterization, which could contribute to knowledge in one of the important aspects of mycobacterial physiology and also provide new information relevant to drug development.
