Graduate profile and learning objectives
The institution defines the learning objectives of the study programme such as student's abilities at the time of completion of the programme and the main learning outcomes.
The graduate of the 3rd degree of the study programme Botany will acquire education in the areas of botany related to the focus of his/her dissertation and will become familiar with modern scientific methods, which are part of the scientific discipline of Botany in its current concept. The graduate will acquire sufficient orientation in the problems in accordance with the specifics of individual areas and systematic groups of organisms, especially plant phylogeny and florogenesis, based on the current state of scientific knowledge of genetics, molecular biology, systematics and taxonomy, phytocoenology, ecology, palaeobotany, phytogeography, aerobiology and aeropalynology. The breadth of knowledge acquired is essential for a graduate's firmly established theoretical and practical equipping in terms of their knowledge, but equally supports the development of their potential in the broad field of applied practice. The results of the training will also be reflected in the graduate's overview in terms of methodological approaches and methodologies in the subject matter. He/she understands the principles of scientific work and its ethical, legal, philosophical and social attributes. The results of creative experimental work contribute not only to the development of science and scientific knowledge, but also to their application in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, protection of the plant gene pool, conservation and management of nature, protection and creation of the environment. During the studies, the graduate will gain pedagogical experience in conducting and organizing practical exercises, professional seminars and field trips for students of the first stage of studies, he/she is able to conduct and oppose bachelor theses of graduates of the study programme Botany. Within the framework of his/her scientific work, the graduate is able to formulate a scientific problem and hypotheses, determine a specific methodological procedure of solution, critically evaluate the achieved results and formulate conclusions. He/she has extensive knowledge of modern methods and solution procedures, which he/she is also able to apply flexibly and innovatively to his/her research. He is able to present the obtained results and conclusions in the form of adequate research outputs, such as scientific publications, research reports and recommendations for social practice. He/she is able to present his/her results to a broad international scientific community and actively participate in professional discussions. He/she is able to use his/her study and research experience in independent creative work, but also as a functional researcher or coordinator of scientific teams.
The institution indicates the professions for which the graduate is prepared at the time of completion and the potential of the study programme from the point of view of graduate's employability.
Graduates of the only specialised study programme of the 3rd degree in Botany in Slovakia will find employment in various spheres of scientific and research, as well as applied fields. The results of their creative experimental work contribute to the development of science and scientific knowledge. Their scientific qualification enables them to apply the acquired knowledge in other scientific and applied fields. Primarily, they work as scientific and scientific-pedagogical staff at domestic and foreign universities and colleges, as researchers in several institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, as well as in departmental research institutes, in the field of nature and landscape conservation, in museums, arboretums and botanical gardens. They will also find career options in the field of water management and water supply in positions of water quality assessment, in the field of state administration in positions of protection and management of the plant biodiversity, in companies and agencies dealing with the quality, sustainability and ecological carrying capacity of the environment.
Employability
Graduates of the study programme Botany are currently working in various positions where they actively apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies. Graduates work as professionals in museums, arboretums, nature conservation authorities, administration of national parks and protected areas. They work in state and public administration, private companies and agencies dealing with environmental quality and sustainability or public health authorities. Some graduates have found employment as researchers in universities and colleges (e.g. Comenius University, Matej Bel University, Medizinische Universität Wien), in institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (e.g. Centre for Plant Biology and Biodiversity) or in departmental research institutes of water management, soil management and forestry.
