From violation of academic integrity to retraction of publication

The FNS adheres to strict standards of academic integrity, including in the area of publishing activities, with the aim of supporting objective and ethically pure creative activity. Violation of academic integrity in publishing the results of scientific work can lead to retraction (withdrawal) of the work. Such a step is an unpleasant moment not only for the author himself, but can also seriously damage the reputation of the home institution.

Within the framework of ethical principles, members of the academic community undertake to:

  • respect the main principles of scientific research, including compliance with recognized criteria of science;
  • honor and respect the rules of objectivity of research and the search for truth while respecting the specifics of the given field;
  • be open to team cooperation and professional discussion, communicate in a factual and open manner with correct argumentation, support creative dialogue;
  • be personally responsible for the procedures, credibility, originality and results in scientific research; reject unscientific procedures and approaches in scientific research;
  • not allow conflicts of interest, bias, purposeful distortions or influencing one's person by external interests when performing expert and assessment activities.
  • take care of the protection of copyright and other intellectual property rights;
  • respect the relevant and internationally recognized publication rules - authorship and co-authorship of a scientific publication, including co-authorship and student participation - for presenting and publishing the results of educational, scientific and research activities and artistic activities; not publish in an ethically questionable manner, not appropriate the results of the work of others;
  • cite correctly and correctly according to internationally recognized rules for citing the information sources used;
  • does not tolerate the creation of obstacles to the publication of the results of scientific and research and artistic activities;
  • does not tolerate fraud, falsification and plagiarism in scientific and research and artistic activities and in the disclosure and publication of their results;

In this regard, it is necessary to remember, among other things:

  • Adding your own citations in the process of reviewing and revising a scientific paper is a disputable practice.
  • Excessively citing your own work is usually considered unserious, especially if the work of other researchers is not adequately cited.
  • Citing work that is not related to the issue being addressed is highly inappropriate.
  • Using images, diagrams, graphs or their important parts from other publications without citing the original sources is not a sign of a serious personality. In most cases, it is even necessary to request permission from the publisher to use (Copyright) these materials in other publications.
  • Each co-author has his or her share of responsibility for the entire publication. It is advisable for all authors to familiarize themselves with all parts of a publication created in broader cooperation.
  • It is important to obtain, process and present primary scientific data in the right way and to store them even after the research is completed. Several problems with retraction of works are associated with the inability of authors to provide primary data supporting the conclusions in the publication in question.
  • It is advisable to apply the tools and procedures of open science - to publish primary data to an appropriate extent in publicly available online repositories or in the form of Supporting information of scientific works. This increases the credibility and transparency of research work.
  • It is advisable to verify the credibility of new collaborators, for example through Pubpeer (https://pubpeer.com/) or Retraction Watch (https://retractionwatch.com/).
  • Proposing reviewers who have a conflict of interest with authors does not correspond to a serious approach to publishing.

Precisely because of the serious consequences of reckless action in violation of academic integrity for the good reputation of the institution, FNS adopted a resolution on a thorough investigation of a specific complaint and subsequent liability.

In the event of a retraction of a publication, the author is obliged to immediately notify the Dean of FNS, who, after careful consideration of the situation, may submit a complaint to the Ethics Board and subsequently draw consequences in the area of:

  • penalization of the person concerned (including labor-law aspects)
  • economic aspects of the relevant workplace
  • protection of public sources of funding for scientific and research activities.
