OPEN POSITIONS

Open positions for PhD studies at a newly established Laboratory for Advanced Materials (LAM) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences CU in Bratislava

We are seeking motivated student researchers to conduct state-of-the-art research in recently established Laboratory for Advanced Materials at Comenius University (CU) in Bratislava, Slovakia, with following PhD dissertation themes:

 

1. Theoretical modeling of the properties of crystalline solid materials using advanced computational methods.

Theoretical methods based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) as will be used (and potentially developed) to screen and predict properties, such as crystal structure, thermal stability, optical and electrical properties, of solid materials with application in solar energy conversion, optoelectronics and/or electronics. The research will be performed in close collaboration with the members of the research team experimentally preparing and characterizing the materials and developing their applications. The theoretical modeling will be also used to aid in interpretation of results of experiments. The work will be performed jointly at LAM and department of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University.

Qualification requirements for interested candidates:

· Completed university education (B.S., M.S., or equivalent) in physics, chemistry or related fields

· Basic programming skills in bash, python, and Fortran 90

· A good background in solid state physics

· Prior experience in using periodic DFT codes such as VASP is an advantage

· Basic knowledge of the Theory of Complex Variable is beneficial but not essential

· Strong verbal and written skills in English language

 

 2. Development of 2D nanomaterials for electronics.

The focus of this project is on chemical synthesis and characterization of 2D nanomaterials, structurally related to graphene, studies of the effects of quantum confinement on their properties and their testing in electrochromic and electronic devices, batteries and other applications. The work will be performed in close collaboration with members of the team performing theoretical modeling of the 2D nanomaterials. The work will be performed jointly at LAM and department of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University.

Qualification requirements for interested candidates:

· Completed university education (B.S., M.S., or equivalent) in organic chemistry or related fields

· A good background in organic chemical synthesis, particularly aromatic condensation reactions

· Familiarity with synthesis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons is an advantage

· Experience with electrochemical and spectroscopy characterization methods is beneficial but not essential

· Strong verbal and written skills in English language

 

 3. Development of semiconductor nanostructures for energy storage and conversion applications.

The focus of the project is on synthesis and characterization of nanostructures based on luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals, study of their activity in electro and photocatalysis and their utilization in optoelectronics and electronics. The work will be performed at LAM.

Qualification requirements for interested candidates:

· Completed university education (B.S., M.S., or equivalent) in chemistry or related fields

· A good background in chemical synthesis (organometallic or inorganic) and/or chemical crystallizations

· Prior familiarity with synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals is a significant advantage

· Experience with spectroscopy characterization methods, such as UVVIS absorption and photoluminescence is beneficial but not essential

· Strong verbal and written skills in English language

 

 4. Development of stable narrow-bandgap perovskites.

The focus of the project is on development of methods for preparation of thermally and chemically stable narrow bandgap (VIS-NIR spectral range) materials with perovskite or similar structures, studies of their optical and electronic properties and their testing in photocatalysis, photovoltaics and other optoelectronic applications. The work will be performed at LAM. The work will be performed in close collaboration with members of the team performing theoretical modeling of the materials.

Qualification requirements for interested candidates:

· Completed university education (B.S., M.S., or equivalent) in chemistry or related fields

· A good background in chemical synthesis

· Prior familiarity with solid-state syntheses at high temperatures is an advantage

· Experience with spectroscopy characterization methods, such as UVVIS absorption and photoluminescence is beneficial but not essential

· Strong verbal and written skills in English language

 

Where will you work?

The research will be performed at an EU financed, newly established Laboratory for Advanced Materials (LAM), located in the recently constructed CU Science Park (https://cusp.uniba.sk). As a PhD student you will be participating in a multi-disciplinary research effort including design and preparation of new materials, their chemical, structural and electronic characterization using variety of advanced characterization methods and development of their applications in energy conversion and storage, optoelectronic and electronics. Your participation in this research will include opportunities to collaborate with other research teams from Comenius University, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovak Technical University, as well as our collaborators from other countries of EU and USA. As part of your studies you will have an opportunity to present your research results at various international conferences as well as participate in exchange research visits with our international collaborators.

Compensation:

You will be paid a monthly stipend in the amount of 900-1150 EUR net, depending on your performance and experience, for period of 4 years. After completion of your PhD you may continue your research at the LAM as a postdoctoral researcher, with the possibility to apply for variety of prestigious fellowships (Alexander von Humboldt, Lise Meitner or Marie-Curie Fellowship), for international scientific stays at institutions of your choice and/or apply for positions requiring a PhD, such as senior researcher in chemical and materials science companies, an assistant professor position at one of the universities in Slovakia or abroad, a patent development professional, etc.

Multiple Postdoctoral Positions in Laboratory for Advanced Materials

We are seeking multiple motivated postdoctoral researchers in Chemistry, Materials Science or related area to conduct state-of-the-art research in recently established Laboratory for Advanced Materials (LAM) at Comenius University (CU) in Bratislava, Slovakia. LAM is a European Union and CU co-funded facility with focus on development, characterization and application of novel materials including, inorganic and organic nanostructures, complex assemblies and clusters, narrow-bandgap perovskites, etc. There are currently two open positions:


Position 1: Inorganic Nanocrystals Synthesis. Desired skills:

  • Strong background in colloidal synthesis of chalcogenide semiconductor nanocrystals

  • Experience with preparation of semiconductor -semiconductor, -metal assemblies, core-shell structures, giant quantum dots, quantum rods with metal tips or similar structures.

  • Experience with shape and crystalline-phase control, preparation of 2D nanoplatelets, TMDCs or similar structures

  • Experience with basic structural (e.g., TEM) and electronic characterization (e.g., UV VIS, emission spectroscopy) of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals

  • Experience with studies of catalytic and/or photocatalytic chemical reactions is a plus, but it is not essential

 

Position 2: Organic Synthesis. Desired skills:

  • Strong background in organic chemical synthesis involving aromatic condensations particularly synthesis of PAHs including purification and product separation

  • Ability to execute complex, multistep organic syntheses and product characterization independently

  • Strong background in MALDI-MS and experience with other methods of characterization of organic compounds, such as: NMR, FTIR, GPC, Raman Spectroscopy

  • Experience with electrochemistry, UVVIS absorption and emission spectroscopy

  • Experience with fabrication of (opto-)electronic devices using organic/organometallic compounds is beneficial, but not essential


The candidates for both positions must:

  • Be fluent in English (written and spoken)

  • Have completed PhD in a relevant area of science or engineering.

  • Have demonstrated record of scientific research achievement (through publications, citations, and presentations) in one or more areas mentioned above.
