Department of Mineralogy, petrology and Economic Geology:
The Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Economic Geology was established in 2021 by merging two traditional departments of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University with a rich history, the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology and the Department of Economic Geology. The newly established department is based on the solid foundations of the original departments and wants to respond to the current challenges of the time and society. Our key challenges are securing mineral resources for the functioning of classical areas of the economy as well as the expansion of new technologies, more efficient use of primary and secondary mineral resources, reducing and eliminating the negative impact of mining and other industrial activities on the environment, and contributing to global decarbonization. The tools to achieve these challenges are our knowledge of rock-forming and deposit-forming processes, the ability to comprehensively evaluate mineral deposits based on the application of basic and advanced methodologies of exploration geology, mineralogical, lithological-petrological and geochemical analysis, determination of physical-mechanical properties and laboratory experiments and syntheses, using the GIS environment for creating genetic models, models of distribution of raw material quality, models of assessment of risks of mineral extraction and the spread of negative impacts of anthropogenic activities on the environment.
The department's work is evenly distributed between pedagogical and scientific activities in basic and applied research. Students of all levels of study are a full-fledged part of our research and project activities. The department strives to educate mineralogists, petrologists, deposit and environmental geologists with a wide range of applications for prospecting and mining companies, institutions dealing with environmental protection, environmental pollution remediation or spatial planning. Our graduates also work in state and local administration, research institutions, museums and other geological and gemological organizations.
