Annotation

Land cover is defined as a material expression of natural and socio-economical processes that are concerned to land use at the Earth’s surface. Land cover is spatially differenced by it physiognomic and morphostructural characteristics and indicates the intensity of processes taking place in the landscape. Identification of land cover is a primary and necessary prerequisite for the analysis of land use, its causes and consequences, and for assessment of human impacts on the landscape, as well as for solving the problem of ecological stability. The proposed project would contribute to a better understanding of the spatial structure of the landscape of Slovakia and its dynamics induced by driving forces and also accent the education of students and their involvement in research of land cover. The main objective of the project is to create a textbook focusing on issues of land cover research in Slovak language for teaching geography and landscape ecology in geographic and environmental oriented study programs at universities in Slovakia. A web page concerning the essential aspects of this topic as well as case studies and a variety of practice-oriented tasks of varying difficulty for students of bachelor, master and doctoral programs is also planned in both Slovak and English languages. In Europe, thanks to CORINE Land Cover, the land cover is the subject of research and application-oriented work that is high on agenda and therefore there is need to educate professionals for the next development of this issue.
