Project summary
River floodplains and river landscape belong to the most dynamic and at the same time to the most by anthropic interventions changed landscape types. Erosion-sedimentary activity of rivers in the past and changes of their channles reflect hydro-climatic fluctuations mainly during the Holocene. Floodplains composition and geomorphological shapes of their surface in the form of infilled paleochannels and buried soils conserve evidences of hydrological regimes of rivers in the past. The aim of this interdisciplinary designed project is to use several data sources – paleomeanders as natural archives, buried alluvial soils, archaeological contexts, written documents and data about floods, and cartographical sources – for synthetic reconstruction of the development of model segments of floodplains. The aim of the project is to obtain a wide spectrum of data about the development of rivers in Slovakia in relation to human settlements, changes in watercourses, historical floods, and forms of river landscape in the past with direct outputs for archaeology, floods protection, climate change research, vegetation reconstruction and nature protection.
